Birthday cake with roses, ranunculus and hydrangea

by Karen Leave a Comment

Here’s a birthday cake with roses, ranunculus, purple hydrangea and a ivy branch – all made from fondant.

Birthday cake roses ranunculus hydrangea

I made this cake a couple of weeks ago for my husbands grandmother. It was her birthday and I wanted to make a nice cake for her.

Cake & filling

The cake is a chocolate cake. It is a light and delicious cake but also firm. This makes it easy to split and fill with a mousse filling.

I split the cake in order to make a 2 layer cake.  The fillings consist of raspberry mousse and chocolate mousse. This is a delicious combination of the sweet chocolate and the fresh berries.

I have frosted the top and the sides of the cake with chocolate ganache before I covered the cake with fondant.

Flower ornaments

I made a small bouquet of yellow ranunculus, white roses, purple hydrangea and small white filler flowers. I also made a ivy branch which I placed along the edge of the cake.

I thought a lot about how to arrange the flowers in a small bouquet. All the flowers are made with floral wire and I have placed the floral wire in a chunk of fondant. I placed the bouquet in a small bowl so the wires didn’t fall out while the fondant dried. Afterwards, I placed the flowers on top of the cake and the flowers cover the little chunk of fondant.

I have decorated the edge of the cakes with a purple silk ribbon which is attached with edible glue. This is a quick and easy way to decorate the edge.

The letters on the cake are cut out from fondant. I have made them with the Funky Alphabets & Numbers Tappit cutter set from FMM. (It says ‘Happy birthday’ in Danish).
